Basmati rice originated in North India and Pakistan. Today it remains not only an important part of various Indian and Pakistani cuisine, but is also used extensively around the globe in Persian and Middle Eastern Cuisines and also more recently in the Western diet.

Literally translated as ‘the fragrant one’, Basmati rice has been described as having the aroma of sun-baked wood and flowers. The name basmati comes from the two Hindi words ‘bas’ meaning ‘fragrant’ and ‘mati’ meaning ‘full of’ and it certainly lives up to it’s description. It’s gorgeous aroma and delicious nutty flavour have made it one of the most popular rices used in Asian cuisine.

Basmati rice differs in appearance from other rices due to its exceptionally long and slender shape and is traditionally served alongside curries, dahls and stir frys. It can also be used to make a delicious fried rice or simple rice salad.

Our certified organic basmati rice is grown in India free from chemical and pesticides.

Recipe Suggestion:

Try adding a 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder to your basmati rice (1/4 tsp to 1 cup rice) whilst cooking and then serve as a side dish with sprinkled roasted & chopped almonds and fresh coriander.

Interesting facts about rice:

There are more than 40,000 different varieties of rice, however, only around 10% are grown commercially.
