Celery seed comes from the dried seed pod of the Apium graviolens plant which is a member of the parsley family.

The seeds are very small, light brown in colour and ovoid in shape. Celery seeds tastes very similar to the vegetable celery.

Celery seeds are useful for adding flavour to soups, potato bakes or mash, or sprinkling over a vegetable salad. The seeds can also be used to make a herbal tea that is very cleansing and great for fluid retention. The flavour is slightly bitter and aromatic.

Today celery seed is grown mostly in regions of India, however history shows they were grown and used as a medicine in Ancient Greece.

Traditionally as a medicine the seeds were recognised for having anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-spasmodic, carminative, diuretic and galactogogue (milk producing) properties.

Some of the conditions celery seed is used for in herbal medicine include gout, urinary tract infections, fluid retention and arthritis.
