Cardamom is a ground seed from a tropical fruit in the ginger family. It is native to India and Guatemala, and has been used traditionally in India for many reasons, one of the most common being as a flavour enhancer in curries.

In Arabic countries it is known for its complimentary properties with coffee and in Scandinavian parts of the world it is popular baked into bread.

Cardamom has a strong pungent and sweet flavour that brings warmth to any dish.

In the Kitchen:

Use cardamon spice to add to your own chai tea blend, to bring warmth and depth to curries, to flavour simple rice or quinoa dishes. It is also great combined with sweet flavours in desserts ie Cardamom Custard.

Interesting facts about Cardamom:

Cardamom has been used for some time in Ayurvedic Medicine as a treatment for depression, mouth ulcers and digestive upsets.

In India, Cardamon pods are chewed on as a remedy for halitosis (bad breath), or for whenever someone wants to freshen their breath.

Cardamom is well known for its ability to calm and tone the digestive tract. It is a natural antiseptic in the body as well as harbouring potent anti-oxidants. Cardamom also contains good levels of the minerals iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc.

Store: Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. In warm climates, refrigeration is recommended.

Shelf Life: Up to 12 months when stored properly.
