Cardamom is a ground seed from a tropical fruit in the ginger family. It is native to India and Guatemala, and has been used traditionally in India to flavour curries.

In Arabic countries it is often combined with coffee after meals, and in Scandinavian parts of the world it is more popular baked in bread.

Cardamom has a strong pungent, slightly sweet flavour that brings warmth to any meal.

In the Kitchen:

Cardamom spice can be added to a homemade chai tea blend. It brings warmth and depth of flavour to curries, and is great to flavour up simple rice or quinoa dishes. Cardamom is also great in desserts ie Cardamom Custard.

Interesting facts about Cardamom:

Cardamom has been used for some time in Ayurvedic Medicine as a treatment for depression, mouth ulcers and digestive upsets.

In India, Cardamon pods are chewed on as a remedy for halitosis (bad breath), or for whenever someone wants to freshen their breath.

Cardamom is well known for its ability to calm and tone the digestive tract. It is a natural antiseptic in the body as well as harboring potent anti-oxidants. Cardamom also contains good levels of the minerals iron, copper, calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc.

Store: Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. In warm climates, refrigeration is recommended.

Shelf Life: Up to 12 months when stored properly.
