Brazil nuts come from a tree native to South America which tends to grow in rain forest areas. For many centuries they have been a staple food source in Latin American nations, and more recently are now enjoyed by the rest of the world.
Brazil nuts are a very robust nut boasting a rich, earthy flavour which lends itself well to an assortment of dishes in addition to being a tasty snack on their own.
Brazil nuts are exceptionally rich in selenium; an antioxidant that is important in protecting our cells against free radical damage as well as playing a role in regenerating other antioxidants in the body, so a fine nut to eat. Brazil nuts are also very high in methionine, an amino acid that is low in many other protein foods. This essential nutrient must be consumed in the diet as our bodies cannot make it. It is needed to prevent chronic depression, is used to treat osteoporosis and is beneficial for the integrity of our skin, hair and nails.
