Rolled Barley
From $2.37
Rolled barley looks and feels similar to the more popular breakfast cereal rolled oats, only it appears darker in colour and has a deeper more nutty flavour. It is more commonly eaten as a porridge with its caramel like flavour and chewy consistency that is not unlike pasta. As cereals go, rolled barley is a winner when it comes to nutrition. It is packed with fibre, low in fat, cholesterol free and contains many vitamins and minerals including niacin, thiamine, selenium, magnesium and zinc, as well as health promoting antioxidants and phytochemicals.
Recipe Ideas:
Rolled barley is great as a porridge in combination with other grains such as buckwheat, quinoa, oats or rye. Try putting this combination together for your very own 5 grain power porridge. Rolled barley is also a fantastic addition for homemade breads or muffins.
Interesting facts about Barley:
Barley grain is known to be one of the worlds first crops domesticated for human consumption, and still today remains as one of the major cereal crops grown in the world (alongside oats, wheat and rice).
Note: Barley contains gluten and so is not suitable for a coeliac or gluten free diet.

100% Barley
Rolled barley is a good source of fibre and protein whilst being low in fat and very low in cholesterol. It contains the trace minerals selenium, magnesium, chromium and copper as well as vitamins B1 and B and also contains many plant based antioxidant and phytochemicals that support good health. The regular consumption of rolled barley is suggested to help ward of diabetes (due to it being high in beta-glucan soluble fibre). This type of fibre found in barley promotes healthy blood sugar by slowing down glucose absorption.
