Oat bran is derived from the outer husk or kernel of the oat grain and is mostly known for its creamy texture when cooked as a porridge. It differs from rolled oats and oatmeal in that those oat products come from the oat kernel, where as oat bran is solely comprised of the husk itself. This means the bran is technically not a complete grain, however it still offers many nutritional benefits including its very high fibre content per serving with low cholesterol and fat. Oat bran is a good source of protein and iron, and a very good source dietary fibre, thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, zinc and selenium.

In the kitchen:

Oat bran porridge is delicious topped with blueberries and strawberries and a splash of honey. It can also be eaten raw as a cereal or added to muesli. Try sprinkling it on top of your regular cereal for added fibre and taste.
